ALKMAAR- AZ has finished the 2020-2021 season with a big win over Heracles Almelo. In Alkmaar, the boys in red won 5-0, youth player Jorn Berkhout made his debut.

Before kick-off, Jonas Svensson, Teun Koopmeiers and Owen Wijndal where honoured. The Norwegian defender played his 150th match last week, the captain did so this Sunday. Wijndal played his 100th match.

First danger
AZ started off dominating the opening stages which resulted in opportunities for Jonas Svensson and Owen Wijndal. Unfortunately, their effords where both off targed. After 13 minutes, Myron Boadu saw a handball and claimed a penalty, but referee Lindhout didn’t go along with him and the game continued.

Headers
In the 20th minute, Heracles showed more attacking intentions, which resulted in two dangerous headers. Fortunately, Orestis Kiomourtzoglou saw his header being deflected by the far post and Sinan Bakis found Marco Bizot in his way, so AZ escaped.

VAR
In an entertaining match, it took mere minutes for AZ to test Heracles goalkeeper Blaswich again. He first saved a shot from Jesper Karlsson and could then watch how Jordy Clasie aimed too high. In the 27th minute, AZ got a penalty, when Fredrik Midtsjø got tackled on the edge of the box, but the VAR intervened and a free kick was all that remained.

Deserved
Shortly before halftime, AZ got what it deserved, when a smart pass from Svensson got to Calvin Stengs. Blaswich could stop his shot, but the rebound was for Boadu and in the 41st minute the boys in red took the lead.

Brace
What took over 40 minutes in the first half, took just four in the second, when Karlsson and Wijndal linked up in a quick attack on the left side and the Swede put the ball in the net. Seven minutes after his first goal, Karlsson completed his first brace when a cross from the right side ended up at the 22-year old: 3-0.

Penalty
In the 74th minute, Midtsjø gained possession on the midfield and found Boadu, who calmly chipped the ball over Blaswich and also scored a brace: 4-0. AZ wasn’t done with Heracles and in the 87th minute, hard work from Tijjani Reijnders earned possession on the edge of the box. Boadu tried for a cross but was pushed in his back and saw the referee give another penalty. This one stood and Wijndal, who hadn’t scored, got the honour of taking it. His first attempt hit the crossbar, but in the rebound he put it home: 5-0.
